Yeah this is my first post, or first entry or whatever you call it in blog land. So what shall I write about... Nothing too personal perhaps, I want to keep it clean. Um, yeah I think I will rant about something, something, oh yeah fuck it. I am writing this blog because I suck at English. It's been eleven fucking years and well people think I am still a wee bit fob. I get my prepositions muddled sometimes but who doesn't? Oh yeah, so I am in the process of fixing it. By learning idioms- heh isn't this sad. Technically I am a native speaker and well I am looking up books written or compiled whatever for ESL students. I haven't been to ESL in like a decade but it was worth a try and yes I benefited from that I think. Or maybe it's just that I've become more confident, or at least less unconfident, the teacher definately wasn't doing me any good. Well, I guess if I made up my mind not to do Phys in the first place, I wouldn't be... But look in the end it is really my fault. I could of done a lot of things but I didn't do it because I was either lazy or scared. Probably a bit of both. I dunno. Procrastination is killing me, slowly... Well good thing that I decided that I was killed the day I was born, if that makes any sense.
I digress. Yeah because I have nothing better to do I am going to write up a to do list.
1. I am going to try and learn like 200 idioms in the holidays(sif thats gonna happen) but to get the best out of it I have to learn to use them in different contexts to the ones that I am familiar to, you know like how ricky lee said that she didn't take anything off the platter. She twisted the idiom "on a silver platter". And yeah that's what I need to do. Oh geez why am I fussing about all of this, I probably know more idioms than most of the Asians. This is a fucking waste of time, says brain. But I have my mind set on doing this. And yeah I am a stubborn person so try convince me otherwise. Back to topic- oh yeah it's hard yeah, even to try and use the idiom in a different part of the sentence. I dunno what I am trying to say is that I want to master them, not just know them by sight or resite them . I want to like own it, make it my slave. Heh
2. Vigorous verbs, oh they are so useful, not really. But it does liven up your "prose", and make you sound more like a native speakers. Completely useless, but it won't take much of my time so yeah i will try and do that after...
3. Grammatically correct sentences yeah, characters and subjects. You know a while ago I had this habit of not finishing sentences and letting it hang over like a bad smell. But yeah, writing actually helps you to speak better. If and only if. A dilectic and diaological process , as they say in the classics. I am going to try and avoid nominalizations where possible. I take it back, but it won't be my first pick.
4.Balancing my sentences, some of the rhetorical techniques may help. But yeah similar amount of syllables, parallelism is incredibly useful.
5. Imply imply imply. Subtelty and subtext, this is going to be harder to achieve,
6. To help me be subtle I am going to get into the habit of thinking a half a sentence ahead, sounds impossible? IT probably is.
7. Work on my humour yeah I will get that book again on thursday and give it a serious look.
8. Oh yeah hyperbaton I think you are. I am going to try and master the sentence structure and the word structure likey.
9. Learn to speak fluently yeah, run them together
10. Is there a room to learn to use assonance and alliteration, you'd be suprised.
11. Oh yeah slang, too read dem books about them too yeah.
12. And well what else, metaphors nah- let's not take it too far. OH the irony.
what's parallelism.
OH yeah tommorow I will post about writing stuff.
